The moment that Jonas is selected for the role of 'Receiver of Memory', is extremely significant in Jonas' journey as this is the starting point of where is life changes drastically, going from a boy, to an understanding, multi-viewed individual through his experiences as the receiver of memory. " 'Jonas has not been assigned,' she informed the crowd, and his heart sank. Then she went on. 'Jonas has been selected.' In a firm, commanding voice she announced, 'Jonas has been selected to be our next receiver of memory.' Then he heard the gasp - the sudden intake of breath, drawn sharply in astonishment, by each of the seated citizens. He saw their faces; the eyes widened in awe."
Jonas experiencing his first memory is a large part in Jonas' character development and his journey. Through this experience, Jonas begins to experience life from a different perspective, and is the first of many memories Jonas will experience, and learn from. "Jonas felt nothing unusual at first. He only felt the light touch of the old man's hands on his back. He then shivered. He realised that the touch of the hands felt, suddenly cold. At the same instant, breathing in, he felt the air change, and his breath was cold. He licked his lips, and in doing so, his tongue touched the suddenly chilled air."
Jonas experiencing war, pain and hunger is an essential part of Jonas' journey as he begins to understand hardships and emotions that other people had to face, and gains a larger world view, rather than that of only himself. "The hands came, and the pain came with them. Jonas braced himself and entrered the memory that tortured the giver. He was in a confused, noisy foul smelling place. It was early morning, and the air was thick with smoke that hung, yellow and brown, above the ground and around him lay growning men. Jonas heard a voice next to him. 'Water,' the voice said in a perched croaking whipser. It was a boy not much older than himself."
Jonas learning the emotion of love is a significant part in Jonas' journey as he begins to feel natural human emotions that were previously forbidden to him and that he was not aware of. After this he begins to care more about the people around him and encourages him to be sceptical of the community and their lack of emotions. This then makes Jonas want for change to occur and for these natural human emotions to be brought back to the community. "He made himself say the words, though he felt flushed with embarrassment. He had rehearsed them in his mind all the way home from Annexe. 'Do you love me?' There was an awkward silence for a moment. Then Father gave a little chuckle. 'Jonas. You of all people. Precision of language, please!"
Jonas discovering release or death, is the most major part in Jonas' journey as he discovers the dark truth behind his community and motivates him to finally take action against the community. "Once again, as he had on the playing field, he felt a chocking sensation. Once again he saw the face if the light-haired, bloodied soldier as life left his eyes. The memory came back. He killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realising. He continued to stare at the screen numbly."
Jonas fleeing the community with Gabriel is a very significant part in Jonas' journey as he leaves the only life he has ever known behind him and goes outside of his comfort zone to break the rules, in order to save Gabriel and himself and also in order to return these memories and emotions such as love back to the community. "That night, Jonas was forced to flee. He left the dwelling shortly after the sky became dark and the community still. It happened at the evening meal. Father glanced down at the toddler. 'Enjoy it little guy,' he said. 'This is your last night as a visitor.' 'It's bye-bye to you, Gabe, in the morning."
