Elle is a new student in her school; she has been having a difficult time making friends and tends to eat alone. This is because word spread regarding her sexual orientation: the fact that she is a bisexual repulsed people.
She’s so odd...
John noticed this occurrence and felt strongly against it. Because of this, he decided to invite Elle to eat with his group of friends. He felt that it was the perfect idea knowing that his group of friends is composed of both heterosexual and homosexuals, which was uncommon and often frowned upon in their school. Elle decided to accept his offer. They soon became close as a group and the longer people noticed them and their differences, the more they came to judge them.
I noticed that you always eat by yourself... would you like to join us instead? We’d be glad to spend time with you!
That sounds great! Thank you!
It all came to a point wherein the disrespectful comments and discrimination towards their group of friends built up and overflowed. John, Elle and their friends decided to make a statement to their fellow students during their break time.
It was brought to our attention that our unconventional set up as a group of friends has sparked controversy among all of you. Sexual orientation should not be the basis of society’s acceptance and level of respect for others. We are all humans and deserve equal amount of respect and decency. Your disrespectful behavior towards us is already discrimination and it is unjust.
Take our group of friends as an example; we are all able to get along with each other despite our differences. Yet, we are not disrespecting any of you in the process.
Their message to their school mates left a lasting impact to everyone. Gradually, all the disrespectful comments and glances at their group of friends lessened and lessened. It seemed that their school was able to show their sensitivity towards gender through slowly showing respect towards them.
Wow! While I know that equality is a long way to go, this sure is a huge improvement!
I agree! Even if people don’t believe in what we do, they are still able to show respect to us. I guess gender sensitivity is actually possible to achieve!
