The Declaration of Independence
Took place at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and 56 delegates (representatives) had attend, but Georgia didn't send any delegates. Colonists continue to boycott, but colonial militias were ready to fight. They made a list of right to send to the king. Representatives will meet again if king doesn't agree within a year.
A meeting of colonial delegates in Philadelphia to decide how to react to the fighting at Lexington and Concord. Creation of a Continental Army to defend colonies. Oliver Branch Petition- petition signed by the colonists for a final peace attempt- fighting had already started at this point and the king rejected it.
Main author was Thomas Jefferson. Others that had sighed the Declaration of Independence where John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman. All men possess unalienable rights. "social contract"- Rulers should protect the rights of citizens- look out for their overall best interests.
