  • When Poe died, he was buried unceremoniously in an unmarked grave in Baltimore. 
  • Poe's statue was erected 26 years later, and his coffin was dug up in order to be moved to a place of honor.
  • Honoring Poe
  • While trying to move his corpse, the apparatus fell apart. Then, they noticed a mass rolling inside the skull.
  • Back then, people thought the clump was Poe's brain shriveled up after 30 years. However, we know, today, that the mass is not actually part of his brain.
  • Matthew Pearl, an American author who researched about Poe's death showed interest in the discovery of the clump. He said that it could be a brain tumor!
  • Studies show that brain tumor can calcify after death into a hard mass. Now, people are starting to believe that Poe suffered from brain tumor, which led to his death.
