I'm after a prize tonight, look for me by moonlight
One dark gloomy night, the highwayman went to the inn to see his love. He rode his horse all the way up to the old in door.
After stumbling through the dark yard, and tapping on the barred shutters, the highway man finds the landlords daughter. This girl has dark black hair and eyes and she is waiting for him when he whistles.
While the robber or highway man and the landlords daughter talked a jealous man, Tim, was listening in to the conversation. Tim the ostler was in love with the landlords daughter and he was mad and pale. The highway man asked Bess, the daughter, for a kiss and said he would be back in the moonlight before the sun.
I hear nothing... Man is it silent out there.
The highway man did not return when he said he would. He was not back by the sun rise or in the afternoon, not even before the sunset and the rise of the moon. The night became dark and gloomy ands still no sign of the highway man.
King Georges men marched into the Inn, and tied up the landlords daughter. They were guarding her window with guns and fear filled her mind. Her highway man had not yet returned. There were deaths and fear all through the inn. Out the window she could see the road that the highway man would ride.
At last the highway man was on his way back to the landlords daughter on his horse. The horses steps were loud and very easy to hear but the men did not hear them. The men did not notice the tlot tlot off in the distance as he rode his way to the inn. He was the only sound in the deep silence as he came closer and closer.
