Henry's adventure through the three phases of matter
Hello! My name is Henry and as you can see I'm made of ice.
While outside Henry encounters radiation which is the movement of heat through electromagnetic waves. These waves can be high or low energy and can interact with a medium or travel in a vacuum.
Oh no! Radiant energy from the sun is causing me to melt!
Hey, I'm a cloud now!
I'm a puddle! It's getting hotter and the all this thermal energy is causing me to turn into water vapor!
Henry is outside enjoying a very sunny day. Henry is made of ice because of a process called freezing. Freezing occurs when the temperature is below 0 degrees Celsius. When water freezes the particles are packed tightly together and vibrate in position.
As radiant energy from the sun heats up the water particles that make up Henry, he reaches his melting point and becomes liquid. This process is called melting. Melting occurs when the temperature is above 0 degrees Celsius. When water melts the particles expand away from each other taking the form of the container and moving faster.
With the sun beaming on Henry he doesn't stay a puddle for long and begins to vaporize turning Henry into a cloud. This process is called evaporation, which is another type of vaporization.
