"Have you heard of the New World"
John Winthrop was born into a middle-class family from Suffolk in the year of 1588.
From Thinking to Happy
When he was a young man he was convinced that England was in trouble. Because, efforts to reform the church did not work out, Puritans, such as Winthrop, were attacked etc.
Winthrop was very worried about his safety, but he the became intrigued by something else. That was the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was a commercial enterprise that offered the chance to change for religious freedom.
But, the Massachusetts Bay Colony was in the New World, and Winthrop wasn't sure that he wanted to leave England. He thought about it and figured out that God was calling him to create a holy community in the wilderness of New England.
He was chosen to serve as the governor of the new Puritan colony. He reminded everyone on the Arabella by delivering a sermon called "A City Upon A Hill". And so, they all sailed west to establish a model Christian communtity, hoping that they would be an example to England and Europe.
When they were in Boston, Winthrop became the leader of the colony. And, he was repeatedly elected governor. Winthrop helped make a model Puritan colony. He did a very good job doing his work, and hoped to set a good example to the rest of the world. He said," We must consider that we will be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us."
