At the beginning of the book, Equality 7-2521 found himself sitting in a dark cave or tunnel writing. Writing about the society he is in is a major crime and what he shouldn't be doing. Based on the text it claims that " It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper... It is dark here...We are alone here under the earth. It is a fearful word, alone"(Rand 17).
In chapter two, we find out about the process that the people in the society did to get there job, and how the jobs affected Equality. Equality originally wanted to be a Scholar but was assigned a street sweeper. In the text, it states "So we wait our turn in the great hall and then we heard the Council of Vocations call our name: Equality 7-2521...This was the only thing which moved, for the lips of the oldest did not move as they said: Street Sweeper"(Rand 26).
At the beginning of chapter two, we found Equality seeing Liberty for the first time. They start to have a spark or a connection that lead them to talk. In the text, Equality stated to Liberty " You are beautiful, Liberty 5-3000"(Rand 42). The was there first time ever having any communication with each other.
After Equality talks and meets with Liberty for the fist time, he starts to worry and talk about fear. Fear of the laws and society and how everyone is affected by this fear. In the text it explains how Solidarity 9-6347 would never stop screaming at night, and Equality believes it because of fear. It states this in the text when "There is fear hanging in the air of the sleeping halls, and in the air of the streets... Yet our brothers are not like us... Solidarity 9-6347, who are a bright youth, without fear in the day; but they scream in their sleep, and they scream: Help us"(Rand 46-47)
At the beginning of chapter 3, Equality makes a major discovery. He discovers electricity thorough a frog. In the text, it states "We, Equality 7-2521, have discovered a new power of nature. And we have discovered it alone, and we are alone, and we are alone to know it"(Rand 52)
In the start of chapter 4, we find Equality and Liberty tell each other there nicknames for each other. In the text their conversation says " We have given you a name in our thoughts, Liberty 5-3000... The Golden One. Nor do we call you Equality 7-2521 when we think of you... The Unconquered"(Rand 55-56).
