The characters in "The Necklace" are Madame Loisel, Monsierur Loisel, and Madame Forrestia. The story takes place in France in the 19th century. Madame and Monsierur Loisel live in a middle class apartment, but Madame Loisel does not enjoy living middle class.
Madame Loisel thinks she is low class and she wants to feel high class. She and her husband get invited to a party.She wants to buy a new dress because she wants to look high class. Her husband says to wear the dress she already has but she believes she will not look high class. So her husband says she will give her the 400 franks to buy the dress she wants.
Madame Loisel Then says she has no jewelry to wear. Her husband suggests flowers but that is not good enough for her. Then she goes to a friend and asks to borrow some jewelry. She asks to borrow a diamond necklace and her friend says of course with no hesitation.
Madame Loisel goes to the party but after she realizes she lost the diamond necklace. She does not know where or when she lost the necklace so they try to brainstorm where she could have lost the necklace. They have to retrace all of their steps to try and find where she lost the necklace.
Madame and Monseirur Loisel could not find the necklace so they had to borrow money to buy a new diamond necklace to replace the old one. It took them a while to get the money to buy it but when they do, they are in major dept. When she gives the necklace back, she does not say anything about losing the original one and buying a brand new one.
Madame Loisel lies to Madame Forestier about the necklace being brand new. Then she finds out years later that the original necklace was not a real diamond. It was a fake one.
