Storyboard Text

  • Bruno
  • Bruno is a curious and adventurous boy.
  • "Well, because Germany is the greatest of all countries...We're superior."
  • Bruno is short for his age and has blonde hair.
  • Gretel
  • Gretel has blonde hair and is wiser than Bruno.
  • "You're nine, ... how would you know?"
  • Gretel is very bossy and spoiled.
  • Father/Commandant
  • Father is a strict and formal person.
  • He wears an impressive uniform and a Nazi armband.
  • Bruno is nine years old and is the main character in this story. He is very curious and adventurous. He is very sheltered from the world and does not know much about the Nazis or what they are trying to do. Bruno is very sad living at "Out-With" and his friendship with Shmuel ultimately leads to his death.
  • Pavel
  • "Let the wound relax. And don't go near that swing again today?"
  • Pavel wears a white jacket and appears old.
  • Gretel is the sister of Bruno and is very spoiled and thinks she must have everything her way. She loves the many dolls she has in her room, even though she is twelve years old. Gretel becomes friends with Lieutenant Kotler and thinks he is so great and impressive. She also uses sarcasm often to annoy Bruno.
  • Shmuel
  • "There aren't any good soldiers."
  • The Commandant is the father of Bruno and Gretel and was promoted by "The Fury" which was the reason that he and his entire family had to move over to "Out-With" from Berlin. He is also a more formal type of person. He loves his country and is described as the type of person who would rather give a handshake to his child over giving out a hug.
  • Lieutenant Kotler
  • The Lieutenant has blonde hair and is young.
  • “Ah, those people,” said Father, nodding his head and smiling slightly. “Those people…well, they’re not people at all, Bruno.”
  • Pavel used to practice medicine before he was a servant for Bruno's family. He is very responsible and does not complain about his work. He also seems very selfless and kind and caring to others, especially Bruno. Pavel is also a little old and at one point in the book, he gets brutally beaten and maybe even killed by Lieutenant Kotler.
  • Pavel is caring and responsible.
  • Shmuel is a nine year old boy that lives in the concentration camp at "Out-With" and becomes friends with Bruno. His head had to be shaved to be in the camp, and he was starved and over worked by the soldiers. Shmuel is from Poland, where he got taken way to a ghetto and then sent to this Nazi camp. He also hates the Nazis.
  • He is very skinny and starving.
  • Shmuel is intelligent and brave.
  • Lieutenant Kotler is a young man who despises Bruno and Shmuel. He is very mean and may have even killed the family's servant, Pavel. Kurt Kotler thinks that because he is a lieutenant, he can do whatever he wants and he thinks he can boss around Bruno. Kotler also told the Commandant that his father had left the country at the time of war.
  • "You've a lot to say for such a little man."
  • Kotler is a bully and is very mean.
