In the start of the story, it is stated that the story takes place in a carnival in Italy, and because of the clothes being worn the reader can infer that in takes place somewhere in the 1700s-1800s. We also get to meet the 2 main characters, Montressor and Fortunato. We also learn about Montressor's plan to kill Fortunato
Montressor tells Fortunato to taste some wine he bought, called Amontillado, to see if it is legitimate or not. Montressor also gives Fortunato wine on the way in the cave, and Fortunato becomes slightly intoxicated.
After Fortunato is intoxicated fully, Montressor chains him to the wallof the catacombs and covers him in a wall so no one would find him.
Montressor finishes building the wall, and Fortunato's jester costume bells stop ringing.
At the end of the story, we find out Fortunato was killed 50 years ago, so the events of the story take place in the past.
