Maniac Magee's parents left him one night with his sitter. His parents boarded the P & W high-speed trolley that had its famous crash. Then, 3-year-old Maniac Magee was sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle.
Can I borrow one of your books?
Maniac Magee's Aunt and Uncle always hated each other. While Maniac Magee was singing, his Aunt and Uncle completely ignored him. He was very sad and decided to run away from his home.
I did not!
Who ripped my book?
There was a boy named John McNab who was a giant 12-year-old that was about to make world records for his pitching. One day, Maniac Magee came to the field and challenged John McNab. John McNab had struck 36 batters out in a row. Once Maniac Magee came up to bat, he hit every unbefroggable pitch John McNab offered. This is how Jeffery Magee got the name Maniac Magee.
Welcome to my house. You are welcome to stay here for a while.
The first person Maniac Magee talked to after he left was Amanda Beale. Amanda Beale was going to school with her suitcase of books. Maniac Magee came up and wanted one of her books. She really did not want to give up her book, but she had to get to class still. So, Amanda gave him a book of hers. Maniac Magee would always carry this book in his hands.
There was a kid named Mars Bars who did not like Maniac Magee entering the East Side of town. Mars Bars did not like him because he was amazing at anything such as hitting a ball from the best pitcher in a baseball league. He came up to Maniac Magee to try to snatch the book out of his hand. Amanda Beale came into the scene after a while and noticed her book was ripped.
Amanda Beale eventually let Maniac Magee live in their house for a while. She introduced him to her parents and they really thought he was nice. So, Maniac Magee started to live there. Soon, Maniac Magee did so many chores that the family (Hester, Lester, Amanda, Mr. Beale, and Mrs. Beale) was so amazed on how much he had helped. He had also found many solutions to many problems in the Beale household.
