George and Lennie Arrive to Work
Lennie Gets Left Alone
The 'Tart' Walks In
George and Lennie arrive at work late - around lunch instead of breakfast like the boss wanted them to. They meet a bunch of new people: Candy, Slim, Carlson, Curley, Curley's wife, and Crooks.
Curley's Wife Strikes Again
As can be seen in the book, we come to learn that Lennie is not very good at making decisions for himself. One day, Lennie is left alone in the barn with his puppy that Slim gave to him. As he is playing with the puppy, it goes to bite him, so Lennie smacks it - so hard that it kills the puppy.
Lennie Kills Curley's Wife
While Lennie is thinking about how it is the puppy's fault that Lennie will no longer be aloud to tend the rabbits that he so desperately wants to tend, Curley's Wife comes into the barn. Curley's Wife is known for causing trouble due to her constant flirting with everyone around her.
George is Forced to Kill Lennie
As usual, Curley's Wife just has to stir the pot, but she doesn't realize who she's messing with. She eventually coaxes Lennie into feeling how soft her hair is. When Lennie becomes rough, she freaks out, causing Lennie to do the same.
While she squirms and wallows, Lennie is trying to keep her quiet because 'maybe George will still let him tend the rabbits', but to his demise, she doesn't stop. He begins to shake her, until she stops squirming and Lennie realizes that he has broken her neck. Terrified, he runs into the bushes, just where George to him to go in case of trouble.
When the other guys find out what Lennie did, they are livid. They set out to find him, and kill him. To give him some time so Lennie doesn't hurt more people, George gives they guys wrong directions of where to look. George finds Lennie where he told him to go, and calms him down, and shoots him himself.
