During a carnival in Italy two people, Montressor and Fortunato run into each other. When Montressor runs into Fortunato he offers Fortunato some Amontillado wine but the wine is in his catacombs.
Montressor says that Fortunato had insulted him. Afterwords Montressor makes a revenge plan for Fortunato. Even when doing this he does not tell the reader what Fortunato has done.
Montressor lures Fortunato into his catacombs. Montressor tries to assure Fortunato that he should go back because he has fallen ill. Fortunato tries to drink to ease his cough while continuing down the catacombs
When they reach the catacombs Fortunato sees no amontillado. Montressor in this time of confusion ties Fortunato to a wall. Montressor also begins to seal up Fortunato with bricks.
Halfway through Fortunato yells for Montressor to stop but it is too late. Montressor had finally had his revenge.
Montressor leaves the catacombs with nothing but Fortunato's jester hat echoing through the tomb. Montressor says no one has found him for 50 years. Montressor had succeeded with his plot.
