Storyboard Text

  • The Genetic Mutation of Macaws
  • Megan Miller
  • Help me!
  • Two scarlet macaws are taken from their natural habitat.
  • Both macaws are released into an environment where the population of predators is higher.
  • Ooh, there's a snack!
  • Oh crap!
  • The predation rate was high, which created selective pressure for the macaws.
  • I hope that won't hapen to us!
  • The bright colours of the macaws' feathers makes it easier for predators to spot them, making it difficult for them to adapt to their environment.
  • Where did they all go?
  • The macaws mated and a genetic mutation occured in their DNA, resulting with their offspring growing green feathers on their wings, making it more difficult for predators to spot them.
  • He can't even see some of us.
  • Macaws without this genetic mutation are not biologically fit in this environment and their population will decrease over time.
  • This genetic mutation gave the macaws the ability to hide from predators, making them more biologically fit in their environment.
  • Over time the frequency of this phenotype increases the biological success of the macaws.
  • The macaws with the genetic mutation will likely produce more offspring than the macaws that don't.
