Storyboard Text

  • Originally,  the American government  refused to grant equal rights to all people.
  • The 14th Amendment was ratified after the Civil War, and forbid any state to deny any person "life, liberty, or property without due process of law".
  • The term "equal rights" only went to white males, which wasn't really "equal" to everyone.
  • Republicans were the  main government group that wanted rights for African-Americans, however, Democrats, who were in control during that time, wanted to remain in control, and found many loopholes in the  Amendment to refuse rights to African-Americans.
