Long ago the earth was just water. A man with a flat pipe walked across the waters day and night. The man wanted to treat the pipe well. He thought for six days and decided to put the pipe on land with animals. he put four old men In each four directions to control the wind. Now they would provide a place for the sun dance wheel. A garter snake came to the man and said, "Oh you will be a great comfort to the people and have a great place in the sun dance as the sacred wheel to remind people that their surrounded by water.Then a long stick was made into the sacred wheel. Then a eagle soared and gave his feathers to represent the four old men. THe man then shaped the sacred wheel. he placed an image as a garter snake and had eagle feathers of the four old men.they also added pictures of things from the sky. When it was done he thanked the garter snake.
Long ago, there was a creator he created trees, lakes, rivers, plains, and mountains, etc. Then the creator thought something was missing so she created birds, creepers, and more animals. Then the animals thought there was nothing to do so they asked the creator and the creator created humans. The animals tought him how to live and do things. Then the humans turned and killed the animals. So the creator took what was left of the animals and said if the humans stop being violent he will give the animals back.
In this story a man was with a wolf traveling by the great lakes. He hoped that he would find someone one else he could be friends with. Then he heard singing from across the water and it was the fire keepers daughter. They had four sons and they all went different directions like south, west, east, and north. That is the Pottawatomi's story.
