  • Old immigrants arrived in 1880,came from Northern and Western Europe and were mainly protestant Christians.New immigrants arrived between 1880-1910, came from Southern and Eastern Europe and were Catholics,Jews, or Orthodox Christans
  • They had to face the challenges of learning new languages, adapting to the new life. They hoped for better job opportunities, better life and better job opportunities.
  • They felt like they were a threat to society. So they made laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act and The Gentlemen's Act. They accused them of violence, crime, and poverty.
  • They were called the Gilded Age because of their excesses and their time period. They made their wealth of off their industry and businesses.
  • Their life was pretty good because they were middle class. Some jobs they had were an accountant, lawyers, doctors, and teachers. The difference between men and women were the jobs.Certain women stopped working after marriage.
  • Life was hard for them because they didn't have much money. So they struggled to provide for their families. The settlement house provided them education and social services. Ministers that belong to The Protestant branch began to tie salvation and good work together.
