John Lewis learned the power and authority associated with words from his mother and the Bible. He preached sermons to the family's chickens.
The Power of Words
Lewis learned of the brutal, senseless murder of a teenage boy that used the words " Bye, Baby" to a white woman. The body Emmett Till was pulled from the Tallahatchie River.
Lewis and his peers began to practice for the abuse they wold soon face. They used words to try to dehumanize on another.
White and black people were both allowed to purchase goods and shop in the market/ town area. But only whites were allowed full access to shops and restaurants.
Culture& Cultural Diversity
John Lewis traveled with his Uncle to New York as a young boy. They packed food, beverages, and neccesities for they trip because it was very dangerous for blacks to travel the highways of southern states.
In New York Lewis was amazed that black and whites lived side by side. He could not ignore that revelation, going back to the racist south.
