Mathew Henson was the first African american arctic explorer. He was born one August 8 1866 in Nanjemoy, MD. He died on March 9 1955 in The Bronx, New York City,NJ. He went to Harvard University. His spouse was : Lucy Ross (m. 1906–1955), and Eva Flint (m. 1891–1897)
Matthew Alexander Henson was the first African-American Arctic explorer, an associate of Robert Peary on seven voyages over a period of nearly 23 years. They spent a total of 18 years doing this .Henson served as a navigator and craftsman also.
