  • In this picture, there is an African that is having the worst time ever working in the fields. He is a slave and has gone through many tough times. His overseer was furious at him because he never understood what the overseer was saying. Because of this he has been treated terribly and he has been very injured.
  • In this picture, there are many Africans suffering in the middle passage during the triangular trade. They were all crammed in a boat and had almost no space to move. They hated it so much that they all tried many ways to kill themselves because they hated suffering. One of the things they tried to do was to not eat so they could stave to death. But the people who were trading the slaves knew that if they were going to let their slaves kill themselves, they will lose lots of money, so they whipped them if they didn't eat.
  • أنا لا افهم ما تقول(I don't understand what you are saying in Arabic)
  • GO FINISH PLANTING THE CROPS NOW!
  • In this picture, there are many slaves getting captured. The Africans could not escape because the people who captured them were armed with guns. Also, the capturers even kidnapped children to make them slaves when the parents were not around. People started capturing slaves because they were becoming more rich and powerful with them.
  • I'm tired of slaves being treated terribly! I want to end slavery this instant!
  • Fine! But they deserve to work for us!
  • Some of the few jobs for slaves was to help grow crops in the slave owner's farms, or work as blacksmiths and carpenters. If slaves were lucky, they would have access to something called "self purchase." A self purchase means that if you save enough money by working extra hard and saving enough money, they could buy freedom.
  • Since very few people could buy freedom, many people were still slaves, many people tried their hardest to run away, but if they were ever found, they would have a terrible punishment. Since Africans hated being slaves, they tried smart ways to not do work. One example what they did was to try to not understand what their overseer was trying to tell them what to do like what this picture is showing. Africans hated doing work so much that they even attempted suicide. They did this because they believed that. if they died, their souls would return back to Africa where it is peaceful.
  • Luckily, The 16th president named Abraham Lincoln saw how terrible the slaves were treated. He made up his mind and decided to end slavery. All Africans loved to hear the news that they didn't get to stay slaves but people still treated them badly due to the color of their skin. Sadly, Abraham Lincoln got assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865.
