  • 1824- John Adams and the Corrupt Bargain
  • 1828- Tariff of Abomination
  • 1828-Jackson's 1st Election
  • Andrew Jackson was essentially cheated out of presidency. He had won the popular vote, but the House of Representatives chose John Q. Adams because he had personal connections.
  • 1828-South Carolina Nullification
  • NO TARIFFS!!!!
  • This was a protective tariff passed to protect the industry. This tariff ended up helping the North, but hurt the South.
  • 1830-Worcester Vs. Georgia
  • Jackson is elected into presidency and created the spoils system. This system awarded jobs in government to the people who helped Jackson get elected.
  • 1836-Trail of Tears
  • A tariff was put on imported goods, which upset the South. It hurt their agricultural economy, so they opposed it. They threatened to secede and refused to have the tariffs. Eventually a compromise was made to reduce tariffs.
  • Say YES to tariffs!
  • The Supreme Court ruled that the Native Americans had sovereign powers. Jackson ignored this ruling, and removed them anyway.
  • President Jackson sent federal troops that forced 16,000 Cherokee to relocate West of the Mississippi River. On the journey, 1/4 of them died of starvation, exposure, and fever.
