  • Charles I behaved as if he were an absolute monarch, and he wanted to raise taxes
  • Okay, but you have to sign the Petition of Rights
  • Parliament
  • I want to raise the taxes
  • The Petition of Rights guaranteed that the king could not unfairly jail or raise taxes without the approval of the Parliament
  • Parliament
  • Okay, sure
  • After signing the Petition of Rights, Charles I dissolved Parliament and ruled without them for 11 years
  • Then, King Charles I returned to parliament in hope of getting money to put down a puritan/Protestant rebellion, however the Parliament had other ideas
  • The English Civil War took place and resulted in being put on trial, convicted and sentenced to death. Oliver Cromwell then took the title "Lord Protector."
