Ralph and his mom move from New York to California. This is a big change!
"I already miss my friends. I don't know anyone in California. It will be hard to make new friends at a new school"
Ralph's Mom encourages him to look into some afterschool activities.
"Get outta here, yuppy. Stop creeping around our gym or we'll show you some moves for sure!
"Yo, guys. What's up? Can you show me some moves?"
Ralph Takes on His Bullies
"I'm happy to meet a new friend, Ralph. You know how to stand up for yourself and you know what you want. Let''s go out sometime! Make sure you wear your hat!"
Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek? "I bet you want to know where I learned my karate moves. Please don't make me hurt you again!!"
Ralph is experiencing fear and feels vulnerable in a new city. He has trouble sleeping and feels anxious about school. His mom keeps yelling at him for wearing his hat in the hot California weather. There is a fear of loss and change.
Ralph Makes a New Friend in the Courtyard Garden
Ralph meets Mr. Tiago who gardens in their courtyard. Mr. Tiago senses his loneliness
"Bike...broken. Boy..broken. We fix! Come help me with the garden"
Ralph checks out the local karate gym because after-school activities are a great way to feel that he fits in and to create a sense of community. However, Ralph's plan backfires and he encounters a bunch of bullies who are not open to making a new friend. Ralph fears being different.
Ralph Learns Karate from Mr. Tiago
Ralph was anxious to learn how to fight to protect himself from the bullies. Mr. Tiago wants Ralph to be peaceful.
"Ralph, you must learn focus. Each chore will help you develop your skill. This will require a lot of hours"
Ralph sees the bullies again near school but this time he is ready to defend himself. He is a good fighter and now he has stolen the bully's girlfriend for himself. Ralph took all the love Mr. Tiago revealed to him, he continued to keep the lines of communication open with mom about his feelings, the three of them went out to celebrate their new garden, and Ralph turned his vulnerability to acceptance of self.
Ralph Gets Bullied & Feels More Vulnerable Than Ever
Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek? "Please don't hurt me. I wasn't following you!"
Ralph finds joy and comfort in the garden and has made a good friend in Mr. Tiago. They care for the garden together and Ralph learns about Mr. Tiago's culture. Ralph learns that Mr. Tiago knows karate and he wants to be trained. Ralph is excited for the first time, he is doing better in school, is eating better, and his mom is much happier now, too, that she knows Ralph has a good friend and has become so good at a new hobby.
There is no reason to fix the bike. They will just break it and beat me up again."
Ralph feels a strong sense of accompaniment with his new, old friend. Ralph wants to be liberated from his fears and wants the freedom to choose his way of life in a new city.
"I will work hard!. I will do this! I want to master karate just like you. I want to be a master of this martial art"
Ralph gets beat up by the karate teens. Bullying is a sign of vulnerability, too. Ralph feels worse than ever. His mom wants to call the school and file a complaint but Ralph feels it will only get worse. Now Ralph's bike is broken and he really feels depressed. Ralph is feeling despair.
"Here's the yuppy following us - and still wearing that awful hat! Let's get him guys"
