  • Two months later on April 25th, 1989 the US declared war on Spain. 
  • At the battle of Manila Bay the Spaniards were defeated. The U.S. only suffered a few casualties and didn't even lose a ship. 
  • "Spain causes A LOT of American Casualties!! Many boats were destroyed!" 
  • Back in America Yellow Journalists are expanding the truth and making the war seem much worse than it was.
  • Newspaper Shop
  • Americans see how bad the war is perceived to be through Yellow Journalism and want to get more involved. 
  • We need to come back harder! 
  • On December 10th the United States and Spain signed the Treaty of Paris. Spain agreed to grant Cuba's independence, they gave Puerto Rico and Guam to the United states, and allowed the United states to have the Philippines for $20 million.

  • In America after the Treaty was ratified, by a 2/3 vote, this prompted a fierce debate over imperialism. 
  • Yeah! Now we have control over the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.
  • After the war, we are stronger and more powerful!
