The god of the afterlife, Anubis, the god of enbalming and death, had the head of a jackal and the body of a man.
At death, the soul of the person was weighed by Anubis. It was also weighed with the Feather of Truth. If their soul was lighter then the Feather, then they ascended onto the Field Of Reeds. If your soul was heavier, it was knocked of the scale and devoured by Amneti. If your soul was devoured, you would cease to be. That is the Egyptian "fate worse then death" scenario.
OUT TO LUNCH
In the Field of Reeds, they were surrounded by with everything they loved in life, which included, their lost loved ones, their homes, their favorite books and possessions, and their childhood pets. The Field of Reeds itself is a mirror image of Egypt so that you could enjoy the same things that you did while you were alive.
