  • Today's Class: Science!
  • Good morning students! Today we are starting to look at our new subject material: Science!
  • But Ms. X, I don't want to be a scientist, so why should I have to learn about science?
  • Today's Class: Science!
  • I know that not all of you will be scientists, but it's still important to learn about science. Not so you can just memorize facts and information but I want science to teach you a different way of thinking, I want you to be able to question the world, and think critically. (Life onTERRA, 2012)
  • One day, you and your peers will be the people in society making decisions, voting, and researching (Moyer's & Company, 2014). Without knowing anything about science, how are you going to make all those big decisions for us?
  • You need to have knowledge in order to make informed decisions about the future of society. What if I told you that dragons have been found in Greenland, and we need to begin harvesting their scales for a new source of fuel, would you just believe me?
  • We don't know!
  • No that's silly!
  • What if your favourite celebrity or prime minister was telling you that? Would you change your mind? By teaching you science, I want to help you to question things that you hear in media, or the news, and be able to analyze that information. That will give you the ability to make an educated judgment on whether or not to believe what you are being told.
  • You're correct, and without science not only are we able to discover ways to fix this problem, we are also able to even realize that this is an issue in the first place (LifeinTERRA, 2012)! I want my students to be able to grow into a society that will be able to uncover and solve the problems in science that may affect the world in the future.
  • I bet you all have heard on the news that climate change is happening around the world because of pollution and the way we are living, correct?
  • Yeah, it's getting really bad! I heard there's a hole in the ozone layer!
