Travel By Boat
Marlow asks his aunt to build him up in the eyes of the men who are traveling to Africa as a way for him to be able to join them on their next journey. Through her standings, she is able to secure him a job / passage on the next ship out.
Leaving the Station
Marlow begins his trip to Africa on a steamer and spends the next few pages describing the ocean, land, and settlements he sees on his trip. We also receive a slight description of a few natives he runs into on the trip,a boat of singing men, and a lost and lonely woman whom are not even really acknowledged by the crew.
Upon he and the crew's arrival, Marlow immediately describes the mistreatment of and violence towards the native peoples as they are forced to do hard labor in chains even in their current sickly condition.
Meeting the Manager
Marlow learns very soon that he is to travel further inland to meet 'The Manager' and reach the station where he was to leave from on boat to get to Kurtz. He makes the trip with a few natives and a large man from the station.
After a long period of travel, and learning that the ship he was meant to take has wrecked, Marlow arrives at the next camp and is finally introduced to the manager, who is described with a tendency to make people uneasy.
Marlow meets the manager, who further introduces the character of Kurtz, and questions him as to his intentions of this trip before growing frustrated with his answers and giving up. Marlow then spends the majority of his time near the wreckage of his boat and befriends a 'crazy' native.
