- In 1898, the Spanish American War began. The war didn't last for very long, but the fight for Cuba's independence did.
- We need independence!
- Well how would we get it John?
- Spain ruled Cuba very harshly, and lot's of Cubans wanted independence, so they asked America for help because they were neighboring countries!
- Uh oh, they're right behind us.
- Spain took away Cubans and put them in Spanish camps to die. Even people's families were being taken by Spain.
- My sister and Mom have been taken to a Spanish camp? I have to help them!
- Why does Spain have to be so harsh on us?
- My family don't deserve to be with Spain. They need my help!
- On February 15, 1898, President Mckinley sent the USS Maine to Cuba to calm down the situation, in case there was a war.
- Hey, this is a battleship! I wonder if it is an American Battleship?
