Welcome to Red River Valley
So the Red River Valley became a good place to come and settle because of the rich soil that was perfect for farming.
rich soil ahead
Most of the people that moved to the Red River Valley were anti-French, and anti-Catholic. Because of this it would be now shock for them not to like the Metis people.
The NorWester newspaper was opened by a man named Dr. John Christian Schultz. Although not finished his medical degree he instead started a general store and newspaper. The newspapers became a way to share his anti-Metis views
in 1868 HBC decided to start negotiation with the Canadian government to hand over control over Rupert's Land. HBC didn't consult with the settlers of Red River Valley or gave any interest in what they wanted.
The people of the Red River Settlement were very angry at the HBC for giving up Rupert's Land to the Canadian government. Rupert's Land was renamed North-West Territory and Canadian surveyors came to look at the area of the Red River Settlement but did not recognize the way that they kept there farm land.
