I grew up in this Village and my dad passed away during his last voyage. I am now going to take his spot. I am leaving behind my mother, brother, sister and my dog named Dexter.
We got to St. Annes today and my first day voyaging was EXSOSTING EXHAUSTING! My hands have really bad blisters and I don't get along really well with my brigade because I hold every one up and slow them down. I really wish I could be at home petting my dog.
Today we came across our first set of rapids. We decided to portage because the rocks were sticking through the water and the canoe would've been scraped. The portage was tough. By the end of it my back was so sore that I could barley walk or paddle.
Today we crossed Lake Superior. It is truly a superior lake. We stayed fairly close to the shoreline in case of emergency we could get to land. It was still kinda scary because we didn't know what to expect, because "every year she brings something new!" is what my dad use to say.
FINALLY!! We made it to Grand Portage, and let me just say, it is grand! The trading post was really cool! I got to see inside the post and even STAND in it!
Today I decided that I would go back to Lachine with the brigade. I choose this because I miss my family (and Dexter). I probably will come back next spring to help support my family.
