It was in the 1300s when a new plague was discovered and spread throughout Europe. It was caused by Y-Pestis that gerbils carried and spread all over to everyone. When people got the plague they had a short span of time left.
It was so awful, it had a 66% morality rate. More than a 1/3 of Europe's population died. Some people were so desperate for cures, they did things that did not make sense. They used religion as cures, for example they wrote God's name in a glass and wait until the ink faded and then the sick person would drink the water.
Flagellants were people, usually Cristians that flogged and hurt themselves thinking they were the reason for the plague and sacrificed themselves to God. Some believed the plague was a way for God to punish all of his people for their sins. They thought the pandemic would end if they sacrificed themselves.
The Flagellants were most likely Christians. Going further into Christianity, they Believed in the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity consists of God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. They also went to church, which is a place where Christians worship together
One really famous Christian Church is the Notre Dame de Paris. It was built over 800 years ago. The cathedral was completed over the course of 200 years,it was started in 1163 during the reign of King Louis VII and was completed in 1345, around the time of the plague. The building of the Cathedral was started by Maurice de Sully, who became bishop of Paris in 1160.
