Communism in Romania was enforced harshly by a husband and wife team: Nicolae & Elena Ceausescu. They crushed all opposition to their rule. By 1965, the people were ready for a change.
Ceausescu's policies led to economic decline, just like in the USSR. His solution was to buldoze entire villages to open up more places for industrialization.
In 1989, Ceausescu made a grave error: his secret police murdered women and children who were peacefully protesting his ineffective polices. The army then refused to support Ceausescu so he so lost all power, was tried and executed by his own people. Communist rule had finally come to an official end.
