  • The Atakapa tribe called themselves Ishak which means "The People." The Choctaw called them Atakapa meaning "man eater."
  • Within the tribe, there were "The Sunrise People" who lived in Louisiana and "The Sunset People" who lived in southeastern Texas along the Gulf of Mexico. Southeastern Texas has a relatively warm climate that often gets rain.
  • The men made their tools for hunting.  They had bows, arrows, fish spears, and flint-tipped spears.  They speared alligators in the eye.
  • The Atakapa used bones and skins to make clothing, tent covers, tools, and sewing materials.  In the summer, they lived near the coast.
  • The Atakapa ate shellfish and fish.  The women gathered bird eggs.  The men hunted deer, bear and bison.  The women grew maize.In the winters, they moved inland and lived in villages of houses made with thatch and poles.
