Little Ryan (who is 9 years old) likes to make everyone laugh with his loud belches in the middle of a meal. However, Grandma thinks this behavior is unacceptable. Little Billy needs to cease belching during the meal so that Grandma doesn’t make a scene.
Hey there Ryan!
Hi Dad!
Grandma and Billy's mom leave the room.
Listen son, you know very well that Grandma won't like the kind of "funny" burps that you usually do at dinnertime.
So I need you to be on your best behavior and do your absolute best to not inappropriately burp.
Alright, I guess I can try.
Billy and his dad go off to the dining room to meet with the others.
Think about this. If you behave well at dinner and no burps come out, I'll get us some ice cream.
That's the spirit!
That's awesome! Dad, I really promise that I will be good.
The family has a very nice Thanksgiving dinner. The delicious food was enjoyed and much good times were shared between all. Ryan maintains good behavior throughout the long dinner and doesn't make any unnecessary belching. Dad is using positive reinforcement by offering ice cream to strengthen the response of no burping. If Ryan gets through every Thanksgiving dinner without burping, this behavior will be continuously reinforced.
A short while after the dinner ends...
Thanks Dad!
You behaved excellent tonight Ryan. So as I promised, here's your ice cream!
