  • Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian writer who began to think and write about how government should operate. His ideas have been studied ever since. Two of his famous works are The Prince and Discourses on Livy. The Prince is his most famous book, in which he discusses how leaders should obtain and hold onto power.

  • Humanists studied classical culture and focused on the here and now, the human experience, as opposed to religious issues. They believed in education to further an individual achievements. Machiavelli was without question a humanist. He wrote about government as it actually worked in the real world based on his experiences as a diplomat. He also argued that an individual was responsible for their own advancement as a leader, demonstrating his belief in individual achievement.
