The British burnt down the White House. They wanted to make sure the Americans wouldn't try to take us over again. We stood up for our freedom and it worked.
The British forces took over Washington setting the White House on fire to send a message. They wanted to ensure Canada would never again be attacked as "blackmail" forcing the British to give in to US demands. It was a moment of national pride proving that even though we are farmers, fisherman and fur traders that we will stand up for our colony. Troops would have even done more damage, but unbelievably a tornado and heavy rain ripped through the city putting out the fires and forcing the troops to leave.
