It was about autumn when William Armstrong, AKA Doodle, was born. He was my brother, and he was not expected to live.
Doodle did live!
Don't leave me brother!!!
I could be cruel to him at times. It is human nature to be cruel. I just wanted a "normal" brother!
I would take him to Old Woman Swamp and teach him to stand and walk. Everyone was so happy when Doodle could walk, but I was sad because I only taught him so I would not be embarrassed.
The Scarlet Ibis had been misplaced in the storm. It could not sustain the weather in its frail, weakened state. The Scarlet Ibis died and Doodle was sad.
I made Doodle row and run. He had to be ready to start school. Then the storm rolled in and our lives changed forever.
Pride is a horrible thing! I pushed Doodle too far for my own selfishness, not wanting to believe his vulnerability! He was my fallen scarlet ibis.
