  • Theme ~ The Importance of Dreams ~
  • At the beginning of the book, the alarm clock goes off and literally and figuratively ends the "nightmare", transitioning from dream to reality, in terms of the Civil Rights Movement
  • Lewis works alongside and learns from Martin Luther King Jr.'s ideas, including his belief that a dream is worth fighting for even if it is not achieved in his own lifetime.
  • Lewis helped organize the bus boycott which lasted a full year. The importance of dreaming of the future was necessary to stay committed to the boycott despite the daily reality that no change was occurring.
