Foreshadowing: Thomas and Teresa get the illusion of the end of existence to work. So they start talking about who the first to see a griever will be when Teresa asks Thomas who he thinks will be the first to die, showing that everyday she is becoming more like W.I.C.K.D.
The Motif in The Fever Code is death and loss. Throughout the book Thomas loses Friends, family, and rights. "And he watched , frozen, helpless, screaming on the inside, as they took his friends away." (188).
