In the ghettos the SS the organization that was in charge of the ghettos performed public executions and separated families. They would trick prisoners into getting onto a train to go to another ghetto, but in reality it lead to an extermination camp. This was revealed when one of Oskar's workers managed to escape the gassing and told the entire ghetto.
Schindler's grudge formed when he witnessed SS guards let a child witness a mass execution knowing that the little child would also die in the end.
Commander Amon Goeth was a ruthless commander killing any prisoners if they did not do something right. He managed the old ghetto and committed mass executions in public. Making a mistake was not passable by Amon, and he brought much fear among the ghetto dwellers.
The title "Schindler's List" refers to the list Oskar made that transferred Jewish Workers to a new company ghetto which he owned. It was considered a safe haven compared to the government ghetto. It was considered a haven since conditions were better food was plentiful and all guards were switched every two days making it too short a time to form a grudge against anyone.
