Hi Nurse. Patient 1 complains of shortness of breath, Patient 2 complains of stomach ache
I am a nurse and one of my important role is prioritizing. If I don't prioritize, it may lead to serious complications for the patient
Nursing prioritization on ED based on patient's needs and problems.
Prioritization is classifying patient's problems into 3 levels: High (an immediate threat to patient's safety), Intermediate (non-life threatening actual needs) & low priority (actual or potential problems not directly related to patient's illness)
By using Maslow's Hierarchy and ABCs method, I think Patient 1 needs to be seen first. If he is not getting enough oxygen, she might die sooner than the stomach ache patient.
Based on symptom assessment, I was able to prioritize and give appropriate care which will stabilize my patients and help them get better.
I am going to check her vitals, especially her O2 sat and get help from respiratory therapist to help her breath then i will move to my stomach ache patient.
