  • The black box symbolizes unfairness because a random person is stoned to death for selecting a piece of paper with a black mark on it.  The black box also symbolizes how long this annual tradition has been going on for because the box is described as old and falling apart. Along with these symbols, the color of the box (black) often times is associated with death or evil beings.
  • T-Tone and Theme
  • "The smoothest and roundest stones."  is a quote from the story that foreshadows the ending.  When the boys collect rocks and stuff them in their pockets, it seems like an innocent way to pass time but we find out that the rocks are used to stone whoever takes the paper with the black dot.
  • Dues Ex Machina: "Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon." Old Man Warner was discussing with Mr. Adams that other cities were trying to outlaw the lottery and that he was very offended that someone would try to break such  an important ritual. The conversation between these two men indicate that the lottery is practiced because the villagers believe without a sacrifice their corn supply would not be  prosperous.
  •  The tone  of the lottery is suspense because you don't know what the meaning of lottery is until the ending.  The theme of this story is blindly following tradition, the villagers of this town believe in superstitious myths that  lead you to believe that sacrifice will help with the towns agriculture but if they communicated with towns that had banned this practice, then they would have realized that their crop yeild is influenced by environmental factors.
