This scene is when Nick and Jordan attend one of Gatsby's extravagant parties. Nick meets Gatsby for the first time and learns something important about the mysterious man. The reassuring smile is Gatsby's synecdoche,"He smiled understandingly ... Precisely at that point it vanished - and I was looking at an elegant roughneck", Gatsby's smile reveals a securing image but also reveals that Gatsby is a mystery man that is hiding something (Fitzgerald 48).
Tom and Daisy Buchanan are very wealthy people. Daisy is never afraid to express the wealth and amazing husband that is present in the Buchanan life, but they do not have the perfect life as if it may seem. Tom has a side relationship with Myrtle Wilson. While Tom drags Nick off "to meet my girl", Daisy starts to have feelings for Gatsby later on (Fitzgerald 24). Daisy has feelings for Gatsby again when the secret is discovered that Tom has another relationship, "pulled his face down, kissing him", Daisy then decides to give Tom a taste of that medicine (Fitzgerald 116).
Gatsby is a very big story teller, also known as a liar. Gatsby has an image that covers up the past because this man does not want anyone to notice the actual truth. Gatsby is a very mysterious man because Gatsby does not, at all, come from a family that has money. Gatsby's parents were "shiftless and unsuccessful farm people" that did not live the magnificent life that Gatsby does now (Fitzgerald 98).
