Arnie asks Mychal about what she is learning in school
Mychal explains Michelle Alexander's theory of the new Jim Crow to Arnie. She explains that the War on Drugs created many laws that target those who live in poorer neighborhoods. These laws entangle youth of color in the justice system at a young age and upon release, many of these people are stripped of the basic rights of citizenship.
Arnie reminds Mychal that consequences are a result of the choices that people make in life.
Mychal tells Arnie about the School-to-Prison Pipeline. She explains how the schools feed the prison system and that some students are unfairly punished due to Zero-Tolerance Policies. Mychal reminds Arnie that we were all young once, and we all did stupid things.
Mychal attempts to convince Arnie that these ideas hold weight by using statistics such as, youth of color make up 38% of our overall population but 70% of those who are incarcerated
Mychal and Arnie's conversation ends abruptly. They hug it out but Mychal knows that her dad may never change his mind on her new ideas. She knows that his perception of events is far different from hers.
