  • Gothic described Germanic tribes that sacked Rome and severely damaged Europe in the 3rd-5th century, by the 18th century it became synonymous with the Middle ages. The Middle Ages were in disfavor because they thought it perceived as chaotic, unenlightened, and superstitious.
  • Gothic Architecture
  • Horace Walpole was the person who wrote the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto. The Castle of Otranto was published in 1764 and was inspired by reconstruction of his home and a nightmare he had.

  • Used pointed arches and vaults, flying buttresses, narrow spies, stained glass windows, and varied details. There was upward movement to suggest heavenward aspiration. It came to describe a certain type of novels in Gothic - Styled architecture. Mainly Castles, mansions, and abbeys.
