  • the Hutchinson family 
  • the setting is in a small village . the story takes place in June and the author describes the worm summer day and the grass is green . all the characters seem to know one another and speak politely to each other as they enter the town square in anticipation of the lottery all of this creates a pleasant mood however , the author adds foreshadowing by having the young boys gather stones.

  • oh no i picked the winning slip this is not fair i didn't get e
  • Mr summers and Mr graves enter the town square with a old black box and stool . the town becomes tense and quiet .the official lottery begins. as Tessie Hutchinson arrives late 
  • falling action 
  • mr. summers pulls a slip and the Hutchinson family has the winning ticket. each member of the family pulls a ticket individually to see who officially wins. bill Sr. does not have the wining slip bill Jr. does not have the winning slip little Davy does not have the winning slip
  • resolution 
  • Mr. summers says ' its Tessie ' bill Hutchinson  forced the slip of paper out of Tessie's hand the slip of paper had a black spot on it . bill shows the croud the slip of paper tessie has he winning slip 
  • Tessie argues that the drawing was unfair but someone hit her in the head with a stone and everyone starts throwing stones at her Mrs. Delacroix tells everyone to hurry up and pick up the biggest stone . as Tessie begs for another drawing 
  • Tessie is stoned to death the theme of the story is dont blindly follow old traditions
