On a cold wet night, father and son were playing chess, and Mrs. White was knitting. Mr. white makes a "fatal mistake" in chess.
Finally, Sargent Major Morris shows up and talks about his trip to India, and has a monkey's paw, it grants 3 wishes to 3 separate men. He is very hateful an hesitant to it and gives many warnings before finally giving it to Mr. White. They agree to wish for 200 pounds to pat off the house.
The next rainy morning, Herbert jokes about the paw and heads off to work. A hesitant man comes to the White's door only to tell them that their son Herbert has gotten mangled by machines; 200 pounds is offered for Herbert's loyalty.
A few nights go by and Mrs. White forces Mr. White to wish Herbert back to life. They here knocking that gradually gets louder and louder.
"Herbert dead again"
Right when Mrs. White unlocks the door, the old man wishes him dead again.
They go out passed the gate and all they see is a deserted street.
