The old man's eye is open. I hope the neighbor's didn't hear that loud shriek.
The narrator is the antagonist in the story he is trying to prove how sane he is throughout the story.But instead of showing how sane and wise he is just further proving that he is insane for killing this old man over his vulture eye.The setting of the story is taking place at the old mans house specifically in his chamber.
Throughout the whole story the narrator is trying to prove how sane and wise he is. By being very kind to the old man so he doesn't suspect anything. At 12 he would look into the old mans room. Also he would look to see if his eye was open with a lantern.Suspense builds when the narrator stalks the old man every night for a week.The Narrator is using both foreshadowing and personification when he says " Death, in approaching him stalked with his black shadow before him and enveloped the victim.
The cops must have heard that loud shriek.
It is the eighth night .The narrator wakes up the old man and continues to walk into his room he has a hour stand off with him.He grabs the lantern and sees the old man's eye is open he begins to hear a low,dull,quick sound he thinks it's just the old man.Narrator's heart beat is getting louder and louder this is symbolizing his anxiety that is rising.Now he worries that the neighbor's might have heard a loud shriek.
I can't take it anymore just arrest me i killed him.
On the eighth night the narrator walks into the old man's room and suffocates him to death.As the narrator suffocates him the old man lets out a loud shriek .
I killed him I finally got rid of that vulture eye.
The narrator is getting rid of the body.He started by dismembering the body in the bathtub.Then he hid's the body under three floor boards .Police arrive at the old man's house because the neighbor's heard a loud shriek.The narrators invites the police in to sit inside with confidence. The narrator sits right under the old man's body.He the starts to hear the old man's heartbeat he is starting to lose it because the sound is getting louder.
The narrator can't take it anymore and decides to confess too the police about killing him. Because he can't stand the sound of the heartbeat.The guilt also got to him.The narrator's internal conflict got the best of him.
