The Narrator tells us he is not mad but just nervous and diseased but can tell you the story calmly. He explains why hes not mad and tells us the steps he takes in the murder of the old man. He (the narrator) loves the old man but hates his " Vulture Eye" Thus driving him to murder.
First, the Narrator tries to prove his sanity. He states that he is unusually nice to the old man for the whole week before the old mans murder Then at 12 he would look in at the old man to see if the old mans vulture eye was open.
Second, the Narrator looks in on the old man extra cautiously on the 8th night. the old man hears the narrators hand slip on the lantern but he cant see the N. standing in the door way.
The narrator opens the lantern so slightly that its compared to a spiders web. The old man is sitting in his bed in fear. The N, sees the old mans "vulture eye" and is infuriates him into pulling the old man to the floor and putting the heavy mattress on top of him suffocating him.
The narrator then dismembers the old mans body in the bath tub not leaving a trace of blood he then hides the old mans cut up body under the floor boards. The police arrive cause the neighbors heard a loud yell than a bang and called the police. The narrator is confident lets the police search the place.
After the police seach the house the narrator ask the police officers to sit down and chat the narrator put his chair right above where the old mans body was. But unfortunately the narrators anxiety got to him and the harsh guilt the narrator had made him act weird he thought he could hear the old mans heart beat. he thinks that the police are playing with him and he confessed to the murder of the old man because of the guilty contusion.
